I believe Honda made a compact car using a CVT. In a car this would seem more appropriate, since a car's mechanical transmission is only about 75% efficient. A CVT in such cases may increase efficiency and even be lighter.

For a grocery-getter it's a simple singlespeed for me. I'm only 60yo so no problems yet getting up the hill on my way back home. ;)

14:36 2/1 is like 42x21 or 39x20 indeed a bit high for touring. 1.8/1 is like 42x23 or 39x22 which is only a bit better. With loaded bags on a steep incline, forget it. Maybe just use these for urban and use standard derailleurs for touring.

Well done thank you for your hard work. A niche consideration may be that It was cheaper to reuse old drop bar parts than to upgrade to a more exotic handlebar that has multiple hand positions but also still considered by you to be "flat". I think amalgamating all bars into one category "flat" and then saying they are cheaper is misleading. Only the base model flat bars are affordable.

Your videos have always been informative but here's the big problem. One needs a frame specifically built to take a pinion gearbox;; they are in very short supply re manufacturers. I recently got a Pipedream Alice frame with a split rear triangle and adjustable dropouts so at least I can fit a belt drive and if, I do mean if, I can ever afford it, a rholoff hub.

No doubt a fantastic bike, but at that price, I would be worried for it being stolen.

Very interesting, but I would miss the connection between the impact of peddling and the movement of the bike. It would like being on an exercise bike in the gym. Also, as I know from owing an electric bike, the regen feature is just a gimmick.

I used belt drives for years. If the belt slips, it's compromised and will eventually slip again and get caught up worse than chains. The belt is so tight in the back sprocket that you use it daily, it will wear down the grooves of the sprocket and make it easier for the belt to pop out and get twisted. It's great not having to worry about oil stains, loss of wattage, and if you're into single gear bikes it's great.

Not a single belt driven bike. Why would you not have belt drive if you're doing long distances? Basically no maintenance required.

I wonder if anyone ever tried the same thing with steel cables instead? Seems like it might improve the life span. But maybe not because of the repeated flexing. Hard to know unless you test it out.
